"Sea Shelters" a participatory project to celebrate, reinforce connections in local communities, between Margate's seven coastal park shelters, between land and sea, between I and my environment. Funding will support research, production, workshops, seven site specific artwork installations/interventions built within the Margate coastal park shelters. (Medium: drawings, sculptures and sound). Many sea shelters seem to be in imminent danger of collapse, and yet have played such an important part in the development and use of the public space over the last 150 years. I’m looking to show the contrast between old and new as well as documenting the rise, fall and perhaps rise again of Britain’s coastal town. The heart of the project centres around working with diverse and new audiences located in some of the most deprived wards in the country through talks, interactive workshops, action research and an exhibition.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Research stage: residents of Margate willing to share their experiences and memories of the seven Margate coastal park shelters. This will involve individuals who would not usually engage with my work. Reach out is to a diverse age, class and ethnic groups in order to create an honest base for my studio work and the exhibition to follow. Workshops with local schools and artists especially from the LGBTQ+ community enabling platform for creativity, dialogue and exchange.
