Our tired, dated 43yr wooden scout hut is unfit for purpose and requires replacement. A deprived area in need of community services for all ages including those with special needs and disabilities.
Phase 1 complete, Phase 2 here we go!! We need to secure funding in order to allow us to progress our dream of a new SCOUT HUT. Lack of space and increased maintenance costs need to be addressed. We have funded the initial research costs through a project working with students of Wton college, parent volunteer payment through work & now we need to get our project underway with the guidance of our local Architect (ACP Architects, Waterloo Road, WOLVERHAMPTON). The hut will provide a two storey brick built building providing more space, safer/secure facilities, community hub and an eye catching focal point in the local area. As a group we have started the initial work to rebuild our scout hut with Phase 1, £4606.70 being spent on Planning and Architect fees. We have now reached a stage where we need to secure funds to meet the Building Regulations (£2700), Tender Specification (£2160) and Demolition/Removal (£6000) (VAT Inc). We aim to raise complete funds & start work by Summer 2020.

This building project will allow us to strengthen the scouting community, allowing us to reduce our waiting lists, support other local scout groups in our district (W-ton South) & provide a safer environment for our young people with increased facilities for children with physical disabilities. We will be able to open the building up to increased onsite activities & it will provide a warmer safer environment for sleepovers, preparing our young people for camp & "LifeSkills. The new building will allow us to utilise more of the outside space as all outdoor equipment will be relocated into the new 2 storey building, this will allow us to have functions on site instead of having to hire other premises for our AGM, Quiz Nights, Awards Nights etc. We have a team of parents who are working on the project meeting fortnightly to discuss fundraising opportunities, we are also looking at trust funds and grants that are available to us updating parents on our secret fbk page.
Steps to get it done:
All our leaders are volunteers giving up many hours to ensure the children of our community are able to meet the scouts assoc. #LifeSkills requirements whilst having fun. The current leadership team have been working hard to ensure the children have a detailed programme to ensure that badgework is completed. The group also has an Executive Committee who meet regularly to discuss the groups needs/safety. We are also privileged to have a fundraising team which is made up of 2 parents who tirelessly work throughout the year putting on events such as quiz nights, breakfast with Santa, Easter parades etc and have a £600 yearly target to raise to allow the leaders to have the equipment needed for weekly sessions. This funding also allows us to support those who are in need of financial support to be able to afford weekly subs, camps and off site activities. The new building will provide a safer environment for our young people & will also improve the facilities of the Merryhill Wton area

As a result of the hard work undertaken to raise funds, Wolverhampton City Council have backed the project with a further £2,332 during the last 24 hours. This is great news for the project and has help us get loser to the final target. We still need to focus on fund raising and I would ask you all again to share the project with friends and family via social media. Please help us over the coming weeks.

Today Karen (GSL) and Sarah (Group Secretary) have hit the streets visiting local shops and businesses to promote 1st Finchfield Scout Group and the Hut Project. They have secured a number of gift donations for future raffles together with a £100 cash donation from ‘Chip Stop’ at Springhill and a £5.00 donation from a member of the public. We will also be securing a further £1000 from HSBC for the volunteer work provide by Mitchell (Treasurer) during 2020 and again the Executive Committee have agreed to donate this contribution to the Hut Project. If we could ask one thing of everyone reading this update, please share the Crowdfund site details with friends, family and work colleagues as we still need a big push to meet our target and every donation made can help whether large or small. Based in the heart of Merryhill on the edges of Warstones, Wolverhampton we offer scouting to all.
We have been running since March 1976 and 3 years ago we celebrated our 40th anniversary by raising funds to treat our young people to a group camp at Beaudesert Campsite.
Annually we organise a DIY day to give the old hut a deep clean and tidy up the outside.
She is an old hut, the joists on the floor bounce, the toilets leak, we still use a £1 coin metre for electricity, NO hot running water, 2 blowers to try to keep some warmth in the hut, a kitchen that really isn't fit for purpose as we often have our furry friends visit regularly when they've chewed there way in, even chewing through the water pipes one year causing a flood.
We try to maintain the hut and about 4 years ago we painted the inside to try and make it welcoming, but thats only a disguise.
Whilst our hut holds many a treasured memory for many young and old in the community its time to ssy goodbye and look forward to making new memories in a building fit for purpose for generations to come.
