Knock down and rebuild the Scout hut

1st Fordhouses Scout Group By 1st Fordhouses Scout Group

We need to knock down the old wooden Scout hut, which was built in 1975 and rebuild a larger brick building, which will provide more space for increasing numbers and a better working environment.

The present Scout hut was built in 1975 with a 25 year life span. It was refurbished in 1990, but is now desperate to be replaced. The single skin, wooden building has very little insulation, which makes it very cold in the winter and we now have rising damp. We need to knock down this structure and replace it with a 2 storey brick building. We hope to increase the floor size, so that we can increase the number of children that we can take. We are limited at the moment due to the size of the building. The upstairs will give us valuable storage space, which we are very short of at the moment. The new building will become a more inviting place for the children to meet and ensure that we can continue to offer scouting to the local children for years to come.

What we'll deliver:

  • Get planning permission for the new building.
  • Demolish old wooden building
  • Rebuild extended brick building
  • Decorate and add heating

Why it's a great idea:

This project will ensure that we can provide Scouting in Fordhouses for years to come. We are fully subscribed at the moment and have to turn people away, or put them on a waiting list, due to the limitation on space. A bigger scout HQ will mean we can allow bigger groups. The young people and the many volunteers that run the scout group, deserve to meet in a comfortable place. The present scout hut is cold and damp. In order to have heat there, we use a gas space heater, which although it works well and heats the room quite quickly, it is very loud, so we have to shout to make ourselves heard. Everything smells damp and you can see the damp rising up the wall. One of our neighbouring groups, has completed a similar project and the results are amazing, which made us want to improve our meeting place. We have been trying to fundraise for the past 3 years and have made some progress, but would ideally like to make faster progress.
