St Birinus School plans to create an All-Weather Pitch to develop the PE curriculum, improve safety for pupils engaging in sporting activities and provide greater opportunities for community sports.

The artificial turf pitch will be 90m x 60m, with a playing surface of 80m x 50m. It will be located on the school site, directly behind the tennis courts, thus being closer to the PE department than the offsite Triangle which is currently used for most outdoor sports.
It will be a boost to the teaching and learning of sports in many ways:
- it can accommodate 7 lessons at once, providing additional teaching spaces for all PE lessons
- it offers the chance to widen the curriculum by giving suitable areas for the study of Hockey and Cricket
- the grass pitches are not always in good condition after the football/rugby season, thus can be a safetry issue for summer sports (athletics and softball) - an all-weather ptich provides a different place for summer sports
- in winter months classes currently either "double up" or miss outdoor PE due to the poor condition of grass fields, which could be reduced with an all-weather pitch
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Other benefits of the All-Weather Surface include:
- increasing teaching time by being located onsite (rather than the Triangle, a 5-10 minute walk)
- the reduced usage of grassed surfaces improves their condition for school fixtures and clubs
- provides an area for sports clubs to run during the winter months that are otherwise postponed
- develop links with local primary schools for sports tournaments and events to be held on the surface
- provide the opportunity for local clubs to hire the facility
