We are looking to raise funds so we can develop social activity groups in rural and coastal communities across East Lindsey, which will provide lonely and socially isolated older people with the chance to make friends and maintain social connections. The prevalence of loneliness among older people in rural and coastal areas needs urgent attention. Too many older people suffer from being alone and not having anyone; this can have a significant impact on their health and wellbeing and lead to them feeling sad, depressed and vulnerable. The social activity groups will offer fun and interesting activities for older people with a focus on those aged 60 years and older. From keeping mentally and physically fit to exploring interests and hobbies and from trying arts and crafts to accessing health advice and signposting to other services, the groups will bring together those older people wanting a bit of additional help to get out and meet people.

What we'll deliver:

  • We will sustain 5 existing social activity groups
  • We will develp 3 new social activity groups
  • We will offer support to 100 older people

Why it's a great idea:

Older people in rural and coastal areas are at high risk of being lonely and socially isolated. Many have experienced reduced social networks with loss of family and friends and this can make make them more vulnerable to poor health and prone to loneliness. One way in which loneliness can be reduced is through having opportunities to get involved in social activities and meeting new people. This can be within a community setting or virtually through digital means. The Rural Chat and Friendship project, will help older people to meet new people, increase social networks and create opportunities for social interaction within the community. This can have very positive benefits on older people, helping them to stay mentally well and more physically active. Having good social networks generates feelings of being socially connected and valued and we feel passionately that our project will bring huge benefits to many vulnerable older people.

Steps to get it done:

  • Recruiting volunteers for the project
  • Promoting the groups
  • Identifying vulnerable older people to attend
