The canal allotment is a self-help, self-build project for Hackney residents in receipt of means tested benefit who don't have a garden. The waiting list for allotments in Hackney has been closed since 2008 as they can't keep up with demand. The allotment will be in wooden planters reclaimed from the Olympic Park built filled with recycled compost made from council food and garden waste from council recycling collections. http://www.londonwaste.co.uk/community/compost/ The allotment will: a) Tackle food poverty by enabling people on benefit to grow their own food. Hackney has one of the highest poverty rates in the country. b) Improve health & wellbeing c) Bring people together, reducing social isolation d) Showcase the use of reclaimed and recycled materials in garden design

What we'll deliver:

  • Veg seeds, edible climbers, soft fruit plants and fruit trees
  • Garden tools & equipment
  • 1000 litre waterbutt
  • Public liability insurance
