We want to transform a dull, disused, desolate area on Redwald Road, E5 to help to create a vibrant green space. We will do this by expanding on a previous 10x greener project which took place a road away and got residents together to help green their front gardens, the balconies of their tower blocks and built a real sense of community cohesion. Together with our local residents we will build beds and herbs, create a haven for wildlife, a beacon for solitary bees, build benches and get the community together and encourage our residents of Redwald Road to green the front of their homes. We also aim to create a massive mural to commemorate our status as the 'Poppy estate' and help celebrate 25 years of our Social housing estate being led by residents!

What we'll deliver:

  • Provide bee posts and habitat panels to promote biodiversity
  • Fit in a communal bench
  • Work with the community to design and create a colourful mural
  • Plant herbs and beds for residents to take as they walk by

Why it's a great idea:

Daily contact with nature is linked to less stress, better mood and reduced obesity. Now a bland area, tomorrow it will be an area for wildlife and a small pocket of green replacing unloved paving. Not only that, but we will also be promoting community cohesion and giving 'budding' artists on the estate a chance to sow their creative seeds in designing a mural that embodies the heart of the estate.

Steps to get it done:

  • Purchasing the necessary mesh and wood for planters
  • Building the planters and putting in seeds / herbs / plants
  • Attaching bee posts / bug hotels to the planters
  • Gaining the permission from Hackney Council to include the mural
  • Have a clear mural design set by the community
  • Painting and completing the mural

We are celebrating our 25th Anniversary of being a social housing estate that is led by residents! We are reliant on the council for our budgets and are provided very limited funds to maintain or improve green spaces - over the last 10 years with the help of our award winning grounds maintenance contractors 'Grassroof Company' we have been able to accomplish promoting biodiversity and greening our areas through several grants we have been awarded - a map of the work we have achieved can be found here: https://bit.ly/2LaqVIE. So we would implore you to helps us make Redwald Road greener!
