The Redbridge Outdoor gallery will look to work with artists and deliver artwork across the new "Grow Zone" at Redbridge Roundabout, forming a strong link between arts & culture and the nature that surrounds us. The artwork, painted by various artists will be shortlisted with community groups across the borough invited to curate and co-design the project. Through the delivery of the project we hope to engage key community groups and give a number of aspiring or early stage artists experience at painting at large scale. We intend to also create a small digital app that educates visitors and passer by on the artwork and share tips on how to support the biodiversity in the area in which people live and visit. We have provisional support from Redbridge Council and TfL to explore this project further and believe this could be one of the largest collections of outdoor street art in East London The project will aim for be carbon neutral project using lime based carbon absorbing paint
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
We believe this project will help promote sustainable public realm practices and encourage active travel in what is currently a heavily polluted area. We hope if successful, the artwork will encourage people to visit the area and promote methods of active travel such as walking, cycling and running. From the application of carbon absorbing lime based paint, we expect to make this a fully carbon neutral project, carefully measuring our impact and ensuring we only use electric equipment and scaffold as opposed to Diesel based equipment. Our materials will be from recycled bamboo for our paint brushes and roller handles, and recycled paint where the lime based paint is not suitable. We believe art delivered in this way can help educate in a subtle and enjoyable way and appeal to people that may not feel comfortable visiting a museum in a traditional setting. We would like to bring carefully considered artwork in partnership with the communities with the help of Redbridge VCS.
Steps to get it done:
Wood Street Walls are a London based organisation working to empower local communities and artists in public space. Together with their in-house team of artists and creative professionals they curate walls and coordinate events and run two artist workspaces in Walthamstow, London. Since their formation over 5 years ago, they have helped facilitate and curate over 100 murals in the East London area and use the power of art and creativity and highlight key social issues and causes that affect London and the UK. https://www.woodstreetwalls.co.uk/community https://www.instagram.com/woodstreetwalls/
