Reclaiming The Green

InStreatham By InStreatham

Following years of neglect and chronic under use we want to reclaim a precious piece of green in our busy urban landscape from street drinkers and pigeons for local families to enjoy for play!

Streatham High Road occupies 2.6 miles of what is a key arterial road, between Croydon and Brixton. The high traffic generated on this route coupled with a narrow and congested High Road means a lack of civic spaces available for local people to meet, share and play. Streatham Green sits almost exactly halfway along our high road and for many years has suffered the anti social effects of street drinking, rough sleeping and pigeons. The local Council, Police Teams, Community Groups and the BID have thought about ways that re-programming this space could help to reinvigorate the area and encourage local people to enjoy the green once again. We feel that by introducing a refurbished shipping container containing soft play and free play equipment which is opened up on Saturday Mornings to run alongside the new Streatham Market we could reclaim the green and encourage families to spend time there browsing the market, enjoying the play facilities and helping to reignite the space.

What we'll deliver:

  • Install a refurbished shipping container containing soft play and free play equipment on Streatham Green

Why it's a great idea:

Following investment from Lambeth Council and TfL changes have now been made to the Babington Road area at the north of the green to pedestrianise the area and allow it to accommodate a weekly Saturday Market selling hot and cold food, fresh produce and arts and crafts. These changes are helping to reshape the area however the success of this market is dependent on local people using it and and we believe the success of the market would be greatly enhanced by the provision of a soft play container and some additional temporary seating which would encourage increased dwell time in the area and bring a deserted and sometimes unloved space back into use. We will work alongside the Friends of Streatham Green, City and Country Farmers Markets (the market operator), Lambeth Safer Streets Team and the local Police to ensure that project is well programmed, safe, sustainable and supported locally.

Steps to get it done:

  • Working alongside We Made That we will purchase, design, implement and manage the play container

In spring 2014, inStreatham commissioned the ‘Streatham Street Manual’, with support from Lambeth Council and the GLA. The Mayors Outer London Fund directly funded the Streatham Street Manual and this application builds on the investment already made by the Mayor. The ‘Play Container’ forms just one of the area proposals set out by the ‘Streatham Street Manual’ created by We Made That.
