Mersea Island is a unique island on the north Essex coast. By working with residents, visitors, local businesses and the local council, the intent is to make the island the first litter free island in the UK. Proud will work with residents and visitors alike to highlight the need for responsible litter disposal, will launch initiatives to encourage a litter free environment, such as a "Neighborhood Litter Watch", will engage with local businesses and the local Council to ensure rubbish can be properly disposed of and will increase the level of resources that can be put into ensuring a litter free environment. This will be of benefit to Mersea Island residents, visitors and wildlife. It will be an on-going initiative but the initial focus is to raise the profile of the issue and to put in place the systems and processes that will lead to a sustainable future for Proud.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Proud of Mersea will reduce the extent of littering of this unique location. This will make the island a more attractive place for residents and visitors alike. Public spaces, such as beaches, parks and streets, will be enhanced, by a reduction in litter and these spaces will be safer for children to play in. Reducing litter will help wild-life to thrive as plants and animals will not be so exposed to the polluting aspects of litter. Much of the north coast of the island is marsh and this is a unique environment that provides a habitat to marine life. Reducing the littering of these areas will help to reduce the risk of plastic entering the food chain. The improved facilities for the deposit and collection of rubbish will help the local council achieve a better environment so residents and visitors can take pride in their surroundings. Proud of Mersea will develop and implement both short and long term initiatives that will lead to a reduction in the scourge of littering.
Steps to get it done:
Proud of Mersea is a wholly volunteer led and run effort. The effort has already received significant public and local business support.
