Tapping into a rich vein of creative talent in Birmingham, Jericho is a hub of collaboration, support and expertise. Jericho is home to designers, makers, musicians, artists, filmmakers and a host of small creative businesses; our vibrant community is formed around unparalleled ecology of curious people, creative space, collaboration and experimental events. Jericho is a celebration of the unconventional; of radical and subversive thinking – it is a place where anything feels possible. Jericho is flexible and has a fluid structure, it is a catalyst for creativity, allowing artists and residents to challenge accepted notions of what arts and culture can do, and who can be involved. Jericho is an advocate for independence to explore and to create; to live and work as freely and creatively as possible, fostering an openness to experiment and challenge.

What we'll deliver:

  • Empowering Women and Girls in our arts program running an space in Birmingham UK that is underused by BME communities
  • Giving women aged 18+ an unique and bespoke experience tailored to their needs.
  • Supporting the Creative Professional Development of individuals that engage with the full program

Why it's a great idea:

We are in the third stage of the project and about to move into the fourth stage of project delivery. We ran some pilot sessions last year during Black History Month and found that we were oversubscribed and couldn't accommodate for everyone who wanted to be involved with our work due to places and finances. This was a good problem for us to have, myself and the team have been doing our work to generate funds in alignment with what the community have said they wanted from us. Project Jericho empowers individuals, communities, and spaces, we are working on the ground level with women from all walks of life and focusing on their individual learning and creativity. We are drastically impacting the lives of women and creatives in Birmingham.

Steps to get it done:

  • To work with women an girls from the BME community and are aged 18 and over.
  • To receive £200 investment through crowdfund to empower the project and individuals
  • To recruit and develop relationships with 20 women who fit all applications criteria.

The project on a whole offers lectures and workshops lead by world-class professors and other professionals across artistic sectors, a range of outdoor activities including High Ropes, leap of faith and rock climbing, pitching and self-confidence workshops and the opportunity to co-create and devise new work in a safe and creative women only environment. The program has been designed so that each woman has the power to draw on her own life experiences to shape the needs of the project, each person brings forth their own skills, creating spontaneous creative learning sessions alongside a fully programmed series of workshops seminars and actives. The notion of living and creating as freely as possible, without the stress of money or creative, or spiritual blocks is kind of NCF’ thing. We pride ourselves on meeting people where they are at, excepting every black woman that chooses to engage with our work and empowering women and girls to be the most excellent versions of themselves.
