The Friends of West End Park By The Friends of West End Park

As the next step in the restoration of our Park we aim to create areas for challenging play, encourage exercise and draw even more of our community to share in the resultant wellbeing.

Having surveyed our user-base we would like to implement their desire to be leaders in our area by having challenging play such as den-building and harder obstacles alongside exercise stations around the perimeter for cross-generational use. We would use the expertise within the council to design these. The games pitch in the centre is badly-drained, sloping and corrugated having been adopted temporarily in the early 1900's and never since improved. Those corrugations are a rare remnant of a mediaeval ploughing system so archeological investigation should precede any work at all. Historical research has uncovered a drain that runs diagonally across the field and so would form an easy route for drainage improvements, making year-round use a possibility.

What we'll deliver:

  • Build a new play area
  • Drain and flatten the games area
  • install exercise equipment for all ages

Why it's a great idea:

Our Park is small but punches well above its weight in terms of what's in it and how it makes people feel. We just want more people to feel that benefit, feel good about their area and feel good about themselves

Steps to get it done:

  • Produce a fully costed plan in partnership with Kirklees Council
  • Divide that plan into smaller, discrete objectives
  • Fundraise to meet those objectives
  • Arrange archeological survey and record data
  • appoint contractors
  • open and publicise new facilities
