We would like to install renewable energy on our thriving sensory community garden in order to have heat and light in the new modular building - Rainbows Community Hub. The Hub offers a range of bespoke learning & creative and cultural opportunities to a wide range of people living in Longbenton and the wider environs. Local people are central to the garden's development. The Patchwork Garden Steering Group, (visit Facebook Justice Prince Patchwork Garden) which is part of the Local Conversation, meet bi-monthly to develop and monitor plans for the garden. Local Conversations is a project set up to tackle socio-economic and environmental health inequalities. JP and Patchwork Garden alongside service users are passionate about tackling the climate change crisis, therefore wanting to create an exciting exemplar renewable project in the locality. Rainbows Community Hub is vibrant with a diverse group of service users co-producing bespoke activities promoting wellbeing.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Development of a zero carbon project at Rainbows Community Hub located on our thriving Longbenton Community garden, 2 minutes walk from the metro station. The venue is fully accessible & has a diverse user group. Service users tell us by being involved they feel that their physical and mental well-being has improved. Many describing how social connections have been vital, particularly throughout the pandemic, a real life line for many. Add value to an existing proven community led Local Conversation project Support local people realise their project aspirations Develop an exemplar renewable energy project in Longbenton Support local schools, families & individuals to learn about climate change & renewable energy sources Support development of a range of sustainable food initiatives serving those most in need Increase bio-diversity on the thriving community garden Boost visitor numbers onto site supporting small affordable café idea Create green jobs & volunteering opportunities
Steps to get it done:
Our project proposal links strongly to the Local Conversation project set up to engage local people in developing solutions that tackle the root causes of health inequalities. It is a low risk investment that will have a huge impact in the locality. We employ 2 core members of staff on site alongside 4 Kickstart community gardeners. We deliver horticultural training to 16 young people who were or at risk of becoming NEET as part of the Working Roots work based training programme. Virgin Money Foundation have invested £10k to support fitting out Rainbows Community Hub with a small kitchen. Peoples Health Trust have invested over £700k since 2014 in the LC which has supported Justice PrinceCIC to develop an outstanding community led project which has an overarching steering group & several decision making groups. Residents are passionate about boosting local assets, creating jobs, tackling climate change emergency, reducing isolation as a way to tackle health inequalities on the estate.
