The money will go towards the funding of new street trees. We are looking to raise enough money to plant up to 60 new trees over the next 18 months. We will be planting two main types Prunus Sunset Boulevard and Pyrus Chanticleer which both produce amazing blossom in spring and have been specifically selected as they require limited maintenance. These specific trees are also considered highly bee friendly and are in general terms street trees are shown to: 1. Remove harmful particulates from the air by roads by up to 25-50% 2. A row of trees in front of houses has been shown to reduce pollution levels in the front rooms by up to 60%. 3. Reduce asthma rates by up to a quarter. 4. Reduce speeding by up to 2mph. 5. Improve general mental health. 6. Reduce flooding risks by disrupting rain time to hit drainage infrastructure and through water absorption. 7. Reduce road noise. These are just a few of the many benefits we want to unlock in this project.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
This is a great idea as it is a tangible and effective step we as a community can take to improve our urban environment and leave a lasting green legacy for future generations. The benefits are already well proven as detailed above - we just need the funding to roll out this campaign faster.
Steps to get it done:
We had already received significant interest from residents and community groups who would like to help and so we are aiming to bring in the community to help with the initial planting and watering, allowing them to really take ownership of the scheme.
