The Polarized Youth Group would like to create a Polarized Centre in Holgate, York. The centre will act as a community hub and a section of the building will be reserved for the Youth Group. The building itself will be as green as possible, with a sedum roof. The Polarized Youth Group will be hosting weekly sessions based around a combination of indoor and outdoor activities. There will also be a regular sexual health service from the building, which will be available in the youth annex for 16-25 year olds. The service will offer condom distribution, basic sexual health advice, chlamydia testing and sanitary products. The Polarized Centre also plans to host a mental health first aid centre, where a trained member of staff will be on hand for advice and guidance or to make referrals. The other section of the building will be available for other community groups, including the very young friends of West Bank Park. The building will host community film screenings to art classes

What we'll deliver:

  • Purchase a custom made green cabin
  • have the cabin built
  • Employ a member of staff, who have experience in mental health
  • Open the Polarized Centre to the community

Why it's a great idea:

The project will ensure there are youth-led activities for the younger generations. The project focuses on bringing communities closer together and improving levels of community cohesion. Through an eclectic range of skills-building workshops the Polarized Youth Group strives towards improving the outcomes, experiences and aspirations of young people. Polarized Youth will host weekly youth group sessions, where we will offer a range of skills building workshops in film making and film production, art and photography, drama and music. The material we gather in these sessions will be used in regular community events to showcase the many talents that the young people of York have! We will also be offering a basic sexual health service for 16-25 year olds and a mental heath first aid service, which is also for 16-25 year olds. The other part of the building will be used as a community space, Polarized will help members of Holgate launch community projects and host community groups

Steps to get it done:

  • The deposit for the building will be paid
  • The building will be moved by crane into the park
  • Contractors will be brought in for finishing touches to the inside of the building
  • Two specialist members of staff will be employed to man the sexual health service and mental health service
  • Community groups will be confirmed
  • The Polarized centre will be opened to the public

If anybody is interested in volunteering with the organisation, feel free to contact me at kateallen@polarizedyouthgroup.org and I'd be more than happy to give you more info! Through the day the space will be filled with exciting events and a selection of street food vendors. The building will begin as a blank canvas, which different members of the community can fill.

Overfunding

This project is enabled for overfunding. If the project hits its funding goal before the end of the campaign period, any extra funds raised will be spent (in order of priority) on:

  • If we reach more than we need to fund this project, we will include out of hours services in our support services.
  • If there are any additional funds after this, they will go towards the up keep of the building.
  • There on after, any additional funding will go towards extending our contracts for the mental health support worker and the sexual health drop in supervisor.
