The pocket park is a small park in the Belgrave area of Leicester. It only has minimal facilities with only some seating and a bin. We plan on making the park much more accessible for all by improving the facility available to the community by fitting it with toilets, a water fountain, and a rain shelter. Out diabetes support group meets here each week to do some gardening as the park has become overgrown and unkept. As a group of people affected by diabetes toilet facilities are essential and can discourage our members from visiting if they are not available to them. Having these facilities added to the park would encourage all members of the community to be able to access this park without being limited by the facilities. Having these toilet facilities as well as a water fountain and shelter will encourage the community to be able to use green spaces like this more frequently and for longer periods of time. Also allowing this area to bring together the community!
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Having adequate facilities in the park will make it accessible to all members of the community's needs. Especially to our diabetic community where toilet facilities are essential when being outside. This will allow us to keep running our groups and encourage more people to join us. This won't only be for us. Having more facilities will encourage all members of the community to use this green space more often. We hope other people can then also use this area for their community groups and socializing
Steps to get it done:
We would also like to have a storage shed/ area to keep our gardening equipment. This will make it easier for us to run our weekly gardening and picnic meetups in the park we also want to build a small kitchen facility so we can run activities around teaching healthy eating for people with diabetes. As well as having a space for people to teach and learn more cooking skills.
