'Plant Britain' in Petworth

Sylvia Beaufoy Centre By Sylvia Beaufoy Centre

We are seeking to support the Plant Britain campaign launched by BBC's Countryfile in 2020. The purpose of the Countryfile campaign is to plant 750,000 trees across the UK in a two year project.

Chichester District Delivery stage

£2,400
pledged of £4,365

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

The Project will work closely with young people at the Sylvia Beaufoy Centre, students from Petworth Primary School and students at Midhurst Rother College. The Centre and the Schools will work together in forming a a tree planting workforce. The local Leconfield Estate has been asked to come up with 5 locations where we can plant some trees (in and around Petworth). The Petworth-based Leconfield Estate is a private traditional agricultural landed estate in West Sussex centred around Petworth House (a National Trust property). The Estate is owned by Lord Egremont and amounts to some 14,000 acres. In addition, the Petworth Town Council have been asked to identify up to 5 further locations within the town itself, where they would like some more mature trees planted. Our time scales are to start the project planning imminently through the Youth Voice Group based at the Centre. The planting of trees would commence in April/May and continue through until March 2022.

What we'll deliver:

  • Plant 250 trees

Why it's a great idea:

There are a number of benefits that this project will bring. These are as follows: • Help to combat climate change • Help to attract and maintain wildlife • Make the local environment more attractive • Slows heavy rain and therefore reduce risk of flooding and erosion • Creates natural shade and shelter for livestock and crops • Positive impact on mental wellbeing for those living in the area – reduces stress and encourages outdoor exercise • Builds community spirit • Educates all in the benefits of the nature around us • Encourages young people to be outside and build links with the community • Educates young people in a skill that they may not have – tree maintenance and care • Builds confidence and social skills in the young people involved • Reduces green space maintenance costs • Supporting a nationally recognised campaign • Raises awareness of environmental issues and may encourage other groups to follow

Steps to get it done:

  • Purchasing the Trees
  • Acquiring the equipment
  • Digging and Planting the Trees
  • Reward and recognition for young people
