We accept that a new "Southern Access Road" is required for a new development of 1,600 houses at Whitehouse Farm. We are very unhappy with the draft plans kindly provided by the Developer, involving an approx 500 yards diversion of Centurion Way away from the historic Chichester to Midhurst Railway Route. A new, minimal path ending abruptly onto a busy new Road. We have an opportunity to provide alternative proposals as a Planning Application that will retain the integrity of Centurion Way as a Pathway free from the dangers of Road Traffic, that links to existing pathways to the Chichester City Centre Chichester, Tescos, Fishbourne and Chichester Harbour. Centurion Way is used by thousands of pedestrians and cyclists for commuting and general amenity. The Route of the old Railway is the vital natural corridor between the South Downs and Chichester Harbour.

The Friends of Centurion Way have decided to apply for this Funding following intense Campaigning and Community feedback, and numerous Meetings, including with West Sussex County Council (who variously own the land) and (on 20th February) with Chichester District Council - Planning Authority (The Chief Executive, Head of Planning Services and The Senior Environmental Protection Officer). We are at the stage where no Formal Application has been made by the Private Housing Developer for the Southern Access Road and associated impact on Centurian Way and it's linear links, but we know that Application will be made within the very near future. We need to be ready with viable Plans that meet the needs of the Housing Development AND enhances our Pathway to achieve the very best outcomes from every aspect. Steps to get it done:
This is our opportunity to work in cooperation for a positive future for Centurion Way. The opportunity is time constrained and complicated but could provide a National template of good practice. Once the Developers have submitted their Plans for approval (any day now) it will probably be too late - such a new housing development is driven by Government Policy and urgent - yet there is no justification to degrade Centurion Way as collateral damage. The original Designer of Centurion Way - John Grimshaw was with us at our Meetings with The Planning Authority (Chichester D.C.). The Planning Authority cannot produce alternative Plans, only react to what is put before them. We can - with your help - produce Plans that we can submit as a Planning Application.
