Tower Hamlets is one of London’s dirtiest boroughs and the majority of the rubbish produced is non-biodegradable. We need your support to help us change local peoples’ attitude to waste. All money raised will go towards creating a bold and powerful campaign using drawings made by the schoolchildren who attended our local litter pick up. This will provoke a change in attitude and help make our borough a cleaner, more enjoyable area and ensure locals think twice about how to dispose of their waste.

What we'll deliver:

  • A strong message around the issues of rubbish in Tower Hamlets
  • Social cohesion
  • Change local attitudes to pollution

Why it's a great idea:

#PickItUp is a campaign started by the students and volunteers of Language Labs. Language Labs is part of our Tower Hamlets community cohesion programme, improving local residents’ literacy rates and getting them more engaged with local issues in their community through various classes and workshops in partnership with ELATT, Citizens UK and Second Home. An issue the students of the group have wanted to address is excessive pollution and littering in the borough, particularly of single use plastics. So we organised the #PickItUp litter pick up campaign with members of ELATT, Citizens’ UK, Blue Dot Generation, Second Home and various members of their community, as well as local school Christ Church C of E Primary School.

Steps to get it done:

  • Securing billboard space with an advertising company in Tower Hamlets
  • Getting the drawings of rubbish produced by local schoolchildren (who attended #PickItUp) printed

Bus stop posters within walking distance of Christ Church Primary School will be transformed using colourful drawings of rubbish found in Tower Hamlets, created by children from the school. These eye-catching posters will be unavoidable and force locals to think twice before littering!
