Pembury Re:Use Hub

Groundwork London By Groundwork London

Help us Reduce, Reuse and Recycle on the Pembury Estate in Hackney! We would like to create an innovative reuse hub - that will be a one-stop-shop for future community learning and social enterprise.

Groundwork's ethos is to change places in order to change lives. This scheme will do exactly that - by radically improving the public realm on the Pembury estate. It will give residents the tools to take part in reuse activities on their estate and in turn will help residents to get to know each other better, learn new skills, and make Pembury estate an even better place to live in the future.

We will look to create a series of re:use hubs by retrofitting current disused facilities on the estate (pram sheds etc). These hubs will be fitted to a standard where they can operate as small social enterprises. The hubs will have the following environmental targets:

• increase reuse and recycling of essential household items by 25%
• reduce incidences of fly-tipping on Pembury by 25%

These small enterprises will become focal points for the estate and will enable residents to congregate and enjoy their estates communal spaces in new ways in the future.

What we'll deliver:

  • Creation and Installation of Re:Use signage and wayfaring signs around the estate
  • Install containers to hold reusable items
  • install racking for goods and purchase trolleys to move furniture
  • Install resources to ensure the re:use hub can become a viable social enterprise - computers/cash register/ phone line
  • Create exciting branded frontages and signage to promote the scheme
  • Improve roofs and make ready disused spaces to become re-use hubs, including damp and weatherproofing
  • Purchase tools, PPE and plant hire for the Re:Use Coordinator

Why it's a great idea:

This ReUse Hub is a fantastic idea as will improve the Pembury estate both aesthetically and the lives of the residents who live there.

This project will be a unique way of creating a community based circular economy, thus boosting local business and employment opportunities

We believe that this initiative will transform the estate and help it to grow and become more Welcoming, Distinctive and Diverse through bringing different under utilized spaces back into use and creating a 'high street of the future' on the estate.

This project links in with wider plans between the Pembury Estate and the large new 'Pembury Circus' development.

Furthermore volunteer teams will be encouraged to host events and activities on the estate to promote the project - this joint community action will create a more animated local community.

Steps to get it done:

  • Delivering a series of community-led environmental and sustainability awareness events and activties
  • The Creation of Reuse Social Enterprise in underused spaces on the estate
  • The programme will be led by a paid re-use coordinator

This project is underpinned by Groundwork's current 'Harvesting our Future' project on the Pembury Estate. We will be using this learning to inform this ReUse hub project, and reusing some of the popular social media handles including #sustainpembury.

Deliverability - This project will be achieved by solid cross-sector partnership working between Groundwork London, LRN, Peabody and Hackney Council. Each partner has clear roles and responsibilities to ensure the project will achieve its goals. Match funding for the Reuse coordinator has already been secured through the EU Life+ funding programme.

Opportunity for Growth - we envisage that this reuse hub model is scalable and replicable across different housing estates both in London and wider in the UK.

Value for Money - Pembury reuse hub will offer exceptional value for money as the project will act as a multiplier and ensure that local people become the living legacy of the scheme and take forward the learning for the future.
