The Pelican Plus Community Centre project aims to expand the capacity & current capabilities of our community hall. This will include a Youth Centre, Music Studio, Cafe & outdoor communal/ play areas. The aim of this project is to expand beyond our current limitations by developing a more comprehensive community centre that is more appropriate for the vast & varied community we serve. Our community includes over 500 Pelican Plus residents, 1000 Harris Academy students, as well as many local businesses and charities in need of affordable facilities to reach our community. Our current hall has a capacity of merely 40 with minimum facilities, which can't accommodate nor inspire community cohesion.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
The Pelican Plus Community Centre is fundamentally a great idea because it will give 1000 Harris Academy students a Youth Centre. It has been a top priority of the Pelican Plus Tenants & Residents Association to make that a reality. Beyond that, we want to make the whole estate feel like everyone's home, not just when people enter their separate flats. By creating a modern, multi-use living space equipped to cater to the Pelican Plus communities different physical & cultural needs, we hope to create a sense of place for our community beyond their doorsteps. We will use our existing connections with the wider community (South London Gallery, Goldsmith's University, Harris Academy, UAL, local businesses and charities) to bring in people with expertise to take part and lead events. Providing a space for charities & local business to operate will raise income for more community projects and boost the local economy.
Steps to get it done:
There is a rich diversity of existing musical talent on the estate and in the wider community. We would love to have a space in which artists we have existing connections with could share their knowledge with the young people who live here, both giving them a safe space to be with friends and giving them the opportunity to learn something new.
