This project was funded on 01 Dec 2019!

Based in the Orton Centre, sessions will be free of charge to children living in the area, allowing them to access high quality musical opportunity to give them the very best start in life. Music is widely known to significantly support general development, communication, social development, physical agility, well-being, imagination and creativity of children. In this area children and their parents are often unable to access such valuable opportunities due to their financial status and availability of activity in the local area without the need for expensive travel. PCYM: Musical Prelude will break down these barriers, allowing children to have the best start in their education through music. Through bursary support and free instrument loan, children then have the opportunity to continue their musical journey after PCYM: Musical Prelude alongside school with our PCYM 'Music Starts Here!' and Full curriculum packages giving the chance to progress, develop and enjoy music to age 18!

What we'll deliver:

  • 60 x 1 hour Saturday morning music classes for young people aged 3-4
  • Free access to these classes for students living in Orton Longueville post code
  • Support and guidance to parents to help their child continue their musical journey once starting school

Why it's a great idea:

43.8% of children in Peterborough are living in childhood poverty with that number rising to 46.6% in the Orton Longueville ward (http://www.endchildpoverty.org.uk). Short term effects of this are apparent with heating and food being very immediate concerns. The long term disadvantages of this are vast including lower academic achievement and higher rates of health problems, employment, criminal activity and poor well-being. Early years music education has been researched widely and proven to be hugely beneficial in countering many of the points above particularly in relation to early educational development and personal well-being (www.sound-connections.org.uk). The biggest barriers face by parents are financial means to take part in privately run music making sessions and the ability to travel to reach them regularly. PCYM: Musical Prelude will take part in Orton Centre and will be free to all living in the area, breaking down the barriers faced and providing real opportunity!

Steps to get it done:

  • Buy the equipment needed
  • Engage a teacher to deliver the sessions
  • Marketing of PCYM: Musical Prelude
  • Recruitment of children for PCYM: Musical Prelude
  • Initial meeting of parents and children
  • Sessions begin
