Our New Cross is a forum for everybody who lives, works & studies in New Cross. We aim to protect & improve our area through projects, events & by developing a Neighbourhood Plan.
The Civic Market is born out of the need to create inspiring engagement and interaction within our community. It is a flexible & adaptable stage to bring new life to currently underused existing open spaces along the A2. It will host a wide variety of events, from community & environmental research to educational workshops supporting the needs of existing & new organizations.
An important part of the Civic Market will be to address one of the biggest problems in New Cross: the A2. Previous research has highlighted the main road as one of the greatest problems in the area: it divides the community, erases the identity of the High Street & creates high levels of noise & pollution. In tandem with the events, we will introduce temporary creative solutions to re-balance the use & character of the A2.

What we'll deliver:

  • We will install temporary street furniture in underused public spaces.
  • We will run events or provide support for other organizations' events.
  • We will conduct environmental research and respond to its findings creatively.

Why it's a great idea:

There are several reasons that make the Civic Market a great idea:

It will create a stronger and better integrated community.

It will support existing and new organisations.

It will temporarily re-generate empty spaces with innovative interventions.

It will study and innovatively address problems associated with the A2.

It will provide background community and environmental data for the Neighbourhood Plan.

Steps to get it done:

  • We will use local enterprises and community volunteers to build/ buy street furniture.
  • We will create the temporary stage in collaboration with the relevant local organisations for each event.
  • We will have local organizations and Our New Cross volunteers running the events.
