A mini orchard in the grounds of St Mary's Church, a community hub, in West Twyford. Initially this will comprise 12 native fruit trees including apples, pears and cherries. The project will utilise the churches' extensive grounds and bring them into beneficial use for leisure and food production that can be enjoyed by the whole community in a neighbourhood with little green space. It will be complemented by the existing tranquil Garden of Remembrance where a new bench will be located. This will provide a further community benefit in that much of the work will be undertaken by a Payback Team. Local volunteers recruited by the church from the surrounding area will oversee the project. It is envisaged that supervised use may be by children and young people from the neighbourhood including those involved in community activities in the church's hall. A key focus will be an Annual Apple Day as a community event drawing people in from across West Twyford.

What we'll deliver:

• Provide gated access for security
• Install bench into Garden of Remembrance
• Plant 12 fruit trees of various native varieties

Why it's a great idea:

The project will bring a significant underused green space into community use. This will be an amenity which delivers an orchard for enjoyment and harvesting by local people, especially those on low incomes.

Steps to get it done:

• Clearance of ground mass eg brambles and rubbish via skip Nov 2021
• Market to local people and seek crowdfunding Nov 2021
• Purchase essential tools/miscellaneous hardware Nov 2021
• Identify tree locations and erect gate etc. Dec 2021
• Order water butts and fruit trees Dec 2021
• Open Apple Day for church members and the local community at 'apple-picking' time June 2022
• Finalise arrangements for the tree planting and launch Feb 2022
