The challenges our young have to face seem ever present brought on by the media focus. I want to reward those that have in some way gone that extra mile, in due course inspiring others.

Waltham Abbey Delivery stage

£1,500
pledged of £11,054

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

I want to reward those young people that have achieved in the face of adversity or have shown great empathy towards others. By giving them the experience of a lifetime I am hoping to inspire them to both continue in their current positive path in life and to embrace the outdoors taking up a sport which due to many cutbacks, is sadly lacking in today's curriculum. The lifestyle that technology is seemingly imposing on the youth of today is one of a sedentary nature. The result of this is an ever growing problem of obesity. In my role as a Councillor I am being made increasingly aware of the long term affects this can have. This is my small contribution to society which I hope will have a lasting positive influence. If the young enjoy the environment around them they are more likely to embrace and cherish it.

What we'll deliver:

  • 200 youngsters will then experience the challenge. Learn a new sport and be inspired by Olympic Athletes presentation.
  • As a group they will become a force for good in Havering. Sharing the qualities that have brought them together.
  • Youth Offender Groups will be invited to select youngsters that have avoided gangs and are attempting to join society
  • All Senior Schools in Havering will identify nine over 14 year olds who have met the critea of selection.

Why it's a great idea:

In keeping with the spirit of the 2012 Olympics, this is an opportunity to introduce a sport which many will never actually experience. The headline is White Water Rafting but the day is much more. A complete package of instruction in all forms of Canoeing (there are many) together with inspirational talks from 2012 Olympic Winning Canoeists. Collectively, they will form a strong bond and if this year is successful I am intending an annual event so as to build a sizeable group of young people who have grasped the qualities that are needed in a society if we are to flourish.
All too often, young people are scared of doing good as it is viewed as un-cool. I want to make this the coolest thing to aspire to.
All local Canoe Clubs will have membership applications available.

Steps to get it done:

  • In cooperation with Lee Valley Regional Park Authority
