Taking the indoors out: We’re creating Britain’s first public outdoor kitchen at Newham City Farm!

This exciting new facility is being designed by cutting edge architects, Studio Weave. The aim is to create a vibrant social hub for the farm - a space where anyone can come along and cook.
Newham City Farm - 10 acres of sprawling farmland with the gleaming towers of Canary Wharf behind - is already a special place. This kitchen will be an exciting new attraction for local families and school groups.
The kitchen will provide a stage where kids and parents can learn about healthy eating and cooking on a budget. It will link to a wider theme on the farm to promote food growing alongside healthy cooking and eating. What better way to learn about where your food comes from than cooking up meals directly on the farm?
The farm already hosts a number of food related events, including a Christmas Feast and apple harvesting at Halloween. We’ve even had one of Jamie Oliver’s team down to give a cooking demonstration. Perhaps with our own outdoor kitchen we’ll get the man himself next time!
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Outdoor kitchens have been big in America for years. They're a simple, affordable and fun addition to public spaces that provide a place for people to meet and socialise. Now, under an initiative by Spacehive, they are coming to the UK. With your support Newham will be one of the first to places to host one!
Not only will this kitchen host a whole variety of events, but it will be an original new design icon too.
But what about the great British weather? Well the truth is that in London it only rains 4% of the time – less than Rome! Plenty of time to enjoy outdoor eating from spring to Autumn.
If we hit our funding target the kitchen will be up and running THIS SUMMER for anyone to come along and use!
Steps to get it done:
This kitchen, along with another pilot site at Phoenix City Farm, is intended as the first of many. The aim is that communities elsewhere will be able to choose their favourite design and fund their own outdoor kitchen. Some of Britain’s best young architectural practices are keen to design them. So look out for spaces near you to host this cooking revolution!
Planning permission is being sought. We are confident permission will be granted, but if not the fundraising campaign will be postponed.
