Using our social media site we have consulted with over 6,000 residents to get their thinking caps on and give their ideas on what they would like to see. The ideas shared so far are: a peace garden, picnic benches customised by groups/residents that have already pledged their support to join in, book benches, totem poles or carved wooden animals. Pathfinders has strong links through the voluntary work we do with a huge number of local groups; voluntary, non-statutory and statutory, Churches and the BID. Together, we can deliver a project which will be inclusive and accessible to all with the assistance of designers. The end result will be shared at the heart of New Addington’s High Street by the community and those who work or visit for many years to come. Funding for a project such as this will add to our identity by bringing together the past, our present and celebrating our regeneration and looking forward to our future.

What we'll deliver:

  • Create benches / Picnic tables which those who can't actively take part in creating can vote on/come and watch if able
  • We are still consulting but whichever option is chosen from our poll, will be sustainable

Why it's a great idea:

From our past experience of creating a small community mosaic, it was great working together, forming friendships with others of differing ages, ethnicity, background and abilities. The youngest person who took part was 6 weeks old (dropping a mosaic square of a different colour just for us all to remember!) and the oldest a 65 year old Grandma.
The mosaic was set into the ground with benches placed either side of it. It has never been damaged (despite some who said it would) and its lovely to see all manner of different people sitting for a moment to wait for their bus, or rest with their shopping, taking a look at the unique artwork created by so many.

Steps to get it done:

  • With the community's input we will plan, draw and identify the materials we would like to use.
  • To have fun completing the project in whatever way we are able!
  • We will submit our plans to Croydon Council for them to check and gain any permissions needed.

Once completed, Pathfinders will host an event on the Market Sqaure to celebrate the art project and we'll invite you all too ;)
