Story Matters is launching Made In Lewisham in 2017, which will tell the story of the borough through a celebration of its past, present and future. One strand of this celebration is My Lewisham. Soundscapes, photographs and short films created for and by residents and community groups will be shown at local festivals and will form part of an online collection. The Go Film It Academy is a Lewisham based non-profit organisation, dedicated to successfully supporting and training unemployed young people in film and media. Headed by award-winning film maker Cassius Rayner who, with Creative Skillset funding, recently trained and mentored young people into the media industry with 100% success rate. He believes that training is essential, but mentoring and supporting young people to advance themselves into employment or further education is key. Success comes from creating hubs for young people after training where they begin to support each other, and work together independently.

What we'll deliver:

  • Deliver one-off training workshops in schools and community groups in Deptford and New Cross.
  • Include the opportunity to work with Story Matters to develop materials for the My Lewisham strand.
  • Recruit and run a training programme for disadvantaged young people from across Lewisham.

Why it's a great idea:

Go Film It will be using the latest digital technology to train the next generation in professional smartphone video production. It is the first organisation to advance with the methods, skills and technology in the UK. It will be passing on cutting-edge experience to the young people it works with, also providing them with a hub once training is completed with mentoring to further develop their skills and they will also have the opportunity to collaborate with Story Matters, to gain some practical experience. Made in Lewisham is a project that not only celebrates Lewisham but aims to give its residents a platform to develop their creative skills, learn about each other, collaborate and be enterprising together. This partnership with Go Film It will provide a fantastic opportunity for local young people to do all of these things, and will enable Story Matters to work with home-grown talent, as it develops and promotes Made In Lewisham and the My Lewisham strand.

Steps to get it done:

  • Delivering workshops and CPD to schools and community groups in New Cross & Deptford
  • Online hub network supporting the development of each trainee to continue with video content, and opportunities posted.
  • Opportunities to further skills with potential paid training positions through Film Fixer and Film London.
  • Promos supporting Made In Lewisham
  • Recruitment process
  • Training
  • Digital video content completed
