To bring Motor Vessel Wearmouth, the last wooden River Wear Pilot boat back to Sunderland, where she served as a Pilot Boat for 40 years
MV Wearmouth is currently stored in North Wales where she has been deteriorating for 5 years. The project is to recover her to Sunderland by road transport so that SMH can restore her to seaworthy condition. She has a long River Wear history and was a familiar sight on the river during her working days.

Why it's a great idea:
We intend to bring an historically significant boat back to its place of work and engage in the restoration of its hull, deckhouse, electrics and engine. This will be done by our enthusiastic band of older Volunteers whose skills include all those required to achieve the restoration. In addition, she will provide interest and activity for our cadre of Volunteers with Learning difficulties, Autism and Dementia. We intend to engage with the local Sea Cadets and University students to assist in the restoration and provide them with real-life practical skills. Ultimately we will provide trips on the River Wear to the general public and provide increased visibility of Sunderland and its shipbuilding history particularly to area visitors
Steps to get it done:
Sunderland Maritime Heritage operates from its Church St centre on Mon, Wed and Friday each week 10.00 to 14.00. We aim to preserve and maintain the history of River Wear shipbuilding while providing meaningful work for our 100% Volunteer workforce. Sunderland at one time was the biggest shipbuilding town in the world.

Wow - Thank you Everyone, with the help of you all we have now achieved our Target. We will leave it open for another week and then close it so that SMH can use the pledges. Once we get MV Wearmouth back to Sunderland we will be launching another Crowdfunder for her Restoration and Preservation. This will be a BIG One !!!

VolunteerSunderland Maritime Heritage is the premier organisation of its type in Tyne and Wear. We aim to record, preserve and conserve all aspects of Sunderland's great Shipbuilding and Maritime history. We are a Registered Charity with an all-Volunteer membership of approximately 30, mostly retired men with a variety of key skills. Our cadre includes folk with Learning Disabilities, Autism and Dementia as well as giving our Volunteers useful and worthwhile work and companionship. (Particularly key in older men)
This crowdfund is to enable us to recover Motor Vessel Wearmouth, the last wooden Pilot Boat on the River Wear, from its current home in North Wales back to Sunderland, where she spent 40 years helping large ships enter and leave the Port.
