We want to fund locally rooted community initiatives run by local people and organisations to revive spaces, offer services, create work and training opportunities and address local needs.
We know local people are the best placed to shape initiatives to benefit their local area so we are opened minded about the types of projects that pitch to our fund but we need to see genuine support and demand from the community. We hope to see projects that are accountable to local communities and trade to benefit them, reinvest revenue and profits into activity and create new economic opportunity for local people. We will be able to see if you have community support through the number of pledges made, support on the project page, social media or the number of people engaged in the project.
We will encourage the creation of opportunities for local people to access jobs, training and volunteer opportunities through an entrepreneurial approach to challenges. Investing in new and emerging community initiatives and supporting their growth will see profits stay locally making a local impact.
Projects will need to demonstrate clear support for the development and delivery of one or more of the Council’s five pledges within its five-year strategic approach, ‘Making Gateshead a Place Where Everyone Thrives’:
Put people and families at the heart of everything we do
Tackle inequality so people have a fair chance
Support our communities to support themselves and each other
Invest in our economy to provide sustainable opportunities for employment, innovation and growth across the borough
Work together and fight for a better future for Gateshead
We are interested in supporting projects that will make a difference to your local area and community. Projects can be as creative and innovative as you like, but they should aim to either help transform perceptions of your neighborhhod, improve a shared or publicly accessible space and/or help bringing communities and people together.
To pledge, you will need to have attended one of the Perception Projects’ engagement events (see above) and demonstrate that there is an interest and/or demand for your project in your community. If you meet the above criteria, we want to hear from you!
There's up to £500 (match-fund) available for each micro-project.
At present, we have run two engagement events within the areas of Beacon Lough East and The Avenues, Bensham.
Upcoming events include:
River Streets, Chopwell (04/07/2018)
Rose Street, Teams (TBD)
Elisabethville, Birtley (TBD)
You must have attended one of these events as part of the requirements of the funding. The financial backing has been allocated as part of the problems identified as well as the ideas that have been generated within these sessions.
This fund is made available as part of Open Lab’s Digital Civics research, which aims to increase understanding of the role that technologies can play to empower communities improving their neighbourhoods. For these reasons, groups or individuals involved in the organisation and delivery of any funded projects may be invited to take part in interviews, focus groups or workshops for the purposes of research.
We are interested in projects that engage local communities in improving their own and others' wellbeing and reduce inequalities. These projects can be for people, buildings or spaces – as long as they add real value to their communities.
We want the projects we support to have a lasting impact on the areas they inhabit and the people they serve, so we look for good potential for growth and sustainability.
We look for projects that demonstrate strong community support through pledges, and involve local people in their planning and delivery.
We fund projects that are delivered in Newcastle by constituted voluntary and community organisations, registered charities or social enterprises.
