The Mettle Works proposed creative space project in Chelmsford, as a whole, will consist of work/studio space that will be rented out to carefully selected creatives including: • Painters • Sculptors • Jewellery designers • Illustrators • Fashion labels • Shoe makers • Photographers • Film makers / Editors • Visual artists • Clothing designers • Animators • Hair stylists • Music engineers • Music producers • Massage therapists And an events/exhibition space that can either be dry hired or run from in house, catering for: • Arts, photography, installation/exhibitions • 'Pop up' events • Vintage fairs • Fashion/clothes sales • Product launches • Roller disco/derby • Award ceremonies • Under cover markets • Various sport or fitness related activities • Workshops/courses • Film & TV location filming • Alternative wedding venue hire

What we'll deliver:

• A repurposed multi-faceted creative space
• Artists studios
• A large open plan high ceiling space for a multitude of interesting possibilites
• An accessible environment for live events and exhibitions for up to 500 people

Why it's a great idea:

Mettle Works is definitely all about capturing and supporting local talent. We see our impressive industrial multi-level warehouse becoming a creative base for those who use it. We’re also aware of the defecting of serious talent out of London, some of which is passing right through Chelmsford. We’ve been involved with several projects alongside the team at The Transition in Chelmsford (www.the-transition.co) which is a gallery for showcasing local artists and will work in partnership with Mettle Works to showcase and provide ongoing support for the urban regeneration of Chelmsford.

Steps to get it done:

• Commission architects’ technical drawings
• Start initial works to make space safe for public thoroughfare
• Connect with the local creatives to generate a following and interest
• Open space at phase 1 for small scale projects and events to generate public interest
• Start buildings works for phase 2 to allow access for 500 people at one time
• Open doors for the ‘big launch’

• Help strengthen partnerships with various local groups • Bring people together and promote community cohesion • Give people an arts/creative platform that is truly and fully accessible to all • Become a hub or home for artists and creatives in Chelmsford and surrounding areas • Give creatives in Chelmsford an opportunity to come together to create, work collectively and potentially cross pollinate • Give people who are interested in arts and culture an opportunity to gain experience in community arts projects • A place where people can immerse themselves in a new arts and culture movement • Be a celebration of our diverse city!
