Memorial Park is a frequently used and beloved park by local residents and works in South Chingford. The park incorporated an already existing sunken Garden of Remembrance and was the first municipal park in Chingford. The extension of the park in the 1930's included Tennis Courts, which are still frequently used by the local residents. However, the surfaces have seen better days and despite their use, two courts are in serious disrepair with weeds and vegetation growing through the broken court's surface. Wood Street Walls in partnership with Love South Chingford, want to raise funds to help renovate the courts; resurfacing the courts with a new pourous playing surface, helping reduce ongoing maintenance, whilst turning the courts into giant works of art - painting giant floor murals, taking a lead from the US Tennis Association and their recent "Art Courts" completed in conjunction with the US Open. We want to make this process fun, asking the public to vote on the design too.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Memorial Park's Tennis Courts deserve a makeover. With Waltham Forest winning Borough of Culture in 2019, we can demonstrate that the north of the borough can show what combining art, culture and play can do. With a local marketing campaign aimed at local residents, we will seek their input on the artwork designs they would like to see, as well as gaining feedback on the use of the park and if additional services could be provided within the courts. We believe there is significant community support and if successful, we believe this would be the biggest artwork in Waltham Forest - something Chingford can be proud of.
Steps to get it done:
We want to ensure the public have their say, and will be putting in flyers locally and promoting online. We aim to help adapt the project to suit the local resident's need.
