A Memorial Planter for Allerton Road

Allerton in Bloom By Allerton in Bloom

We want to build a large planter with seating on the Square at Allerton Road, a hitherto neglected grey space. A memorial plaque will dedicate the planter to Covid victims and carers in our area.

The Square on Allerton Road is only used as a passageway for pedestrians who find very little to keep them there. The planter that we want to install there will completely transform it into an area that invites people to meet, chat with friends or enjoy a leisurely moment. With its plants it will add a Mediterranean feel and bring a sense of enjoyment to this hitherto neglected space. The planter will be dedicated as a memorial to the victims of Covid 19 and for those who care in our area to celebrate our community spirit and will have a commemorative plaque affixed to it. There will be a tree as part of the Roots of Remembrance map of the RHS

What we'll deliver:

  • Put up a large planter on the Square on Allerton Road
  • Have seating installed around the planter
  • Plant up the planter with a variety of plants including a memorial tree and rosemary (for remembrance)
  • Add a memorial plaque celebrating the community
  • Plant up and maintain the planter

Why it's a great idea:

The planter will transform the area - it will become a social outdoor space for residents and visitors alike. Through its plants it will bring colour and scent to a space that has been until now dominated by an arterial road. And it will provide a focal point for our community that has been lacking as there is no other space like it in L18. Air quality will become better and insects will thrive among the plants. In addition to that, through its plaque people will be reminded of the suffering and the generosity of our residents in the last year. The new hub could be an added attraction for visitors to the area and invite them to stay longer and visit shops and restaurants.

Steps to get it done:

  • End of July: order planter
  • Mid - to end September: planter delivered and installed
  • End of September: planting up
