We will improve access to arts resources and free events for our community who face multiple challenges with mental ill health and social isolation.
We will provide three important opportunities: 1. Organisational Investment in our art and exhibition resources for long-term use by our participants and the wider community into the future. 2. Participation Free, high quality art workshops which reflect the skill base and talent of the people who will contribute to an end of project exhibition and awareness raising celebration. 3. Challenging Stigma Our community faces increasing hardship and isolation due to ongoing mental health illnesses combined with living in deprived local wards. They have little or no opportunity to engage with or enjoy the benefits of art and culture. Such individuals are often over looked, cannot access local art groups or simply don't have the confidence to pursue the latent talent they possess. This project will create an easily accessible, supportive and affordable resource for this forgotten pool of talent to gain confidence, thrive, celebrate , connect, regain and maintain their well-being.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
Art offers many benefits for individuals seeking a new way to express themselves, reduce stress, take their minds off worries and illness. This project will offer therapeutic benefits which are important for building self esteem, a sense of satisfaction, achievement and a community. We wish to build on the group art work we have delivered to hundreds of individuals who reside locally, to ensure the environment we provide continues to enable and empower local people, worn down by circumstance, poverty and systemic changes in welfare, health and community services so they are in a better position to make the trans-formative changes they need to improve the quality of their lives. This often influences change for those in family and friendship circles as well, a particularly important focus while we all negotiate current economic and social challenges. “We are all in the same storm, but we are not all in the same boat.” This project aims to celebrate human resilience through art.
Steps to get it done:
As an organization, we have felt the negative financial impact of the pandemic at a time when we had worked towards realizing our goal of self-sustainability but we are in a position to turn this around and recognize that we need support with this. Our location in a catchment between Lower Layer Super Output Areas (LSOA) makes securing major funding very challenging for our organization, hence the need for us to increase the sustainable levels of our own income. Despite this challenge, we have a track record of successfully delivering high impact, low-cost well-being projects which can save lives. This project offers a golden opportunity for our staff, volunteers and community to come together to create wonderful art, closer connections and a much needed sustainable resource for future Art provision for those who seek its therapeutic benefits. We are far stronger working in partnership within the community to ensure we create bonds of support and care which this project can achieve
