Clevedon Marine Lake is a heritage public space, which is run for the community by Marlens charity. Restored in 2015 after 85 years of battering by the sea, we are gradually making further improvement

Provide some facilities for our many less-active lake users, who come to take in the view rather than plunge in the water. The whole lake area is regularly washed by the waves at spring tides, so we will install some solid concrete benches backed into the wall which can withstand this treatment. Concrete and stone can look a bit bleak so we will cheer up the lake surround with 3 lively ceramic murals donated by local artist Nancy Farmer.

Why it's a great idea:
On sunny days Clevedon Marine Lake is alive with activity - swimmers, families crabbing, kayaks, paddleboards, sailors, model boats - but we don't yet cater for the less-active. We have lots of older citizens who enjoy strolling along the sea-front and would appreciate a bench to park themselves on.for a while before continuing their promenade. We also have mums and dads with young families who regularly take them for a walk by the lake, so three cheerful ceramic murals showing different aspects of lake activity will provide something to look at on those days when the lake is quiet.

Offer somethingMarlens is a local charity which runs Clevedon Marine Lake on behalf of the community.
From 2004-15 we were agitating for the lake to be restored. Gradually we brought the Town and District councils onside, and with their help obtained a Heritage Lottery grant to repair the lake in summer 2015.
We then transformed ourselves from a community ginger group to a charity and leased the renovated lake from the District Council, to run it on behalf of the community for the next 50 years.
Even we were astonished at how quickly people flocked back to the lake. It was incredibly busy through the summers of 2016 and 2017 and we have a hardy community of users who swim and boat all the year round.
To keep our fabulous lake in its as-new condition we have volunteer teams who clear up the flotsam and weed brought in by the sea (not to mention the trash left by our less-considerate users). We also have a volunteer technical team who handle the more complex jobs such as pressure-washing the paddling pools and clearing mud from the lake bottom. We are also lucky to have solid support from the local community in Clevedon and beyond.
