Little Family Dundee Farm

Little Family Dundee Farm

Ana Lopes By Ana Lopes

We would like to start a farm in Dundee and have it opened for families and schools to visit. Have different poultry breeds and encourage a new generation to grow their own vegetables and fruits.

My husband and I have become addicted to poultry. We want to share how amazing it is to raise chickens, ducks, goats and even our own vegetables and fruit. We want people to be aware of what it takes to raise healthy animals and how they can take responsability for their own ecological impact by growing their own food according to the seasons, making use of compost to decrease the amount of food and organic matter thrown out and how to best use renewable energy in a farm setting. Our goal is to have this farm running using solar energy and with minimal wasting. So we can lead by example. And obviously, who can resist a chicken when they ask you for food 😆

What we'll deliver:

  • Get the land needed.
  • Build 10 runs for poultry.
  • Rescue roosters and drakes
  • Buy some goats.
  • Instal solar panels on top of the runs.
  • Use the energy generated by the solar panels to operate heating system in the winter and heating plaques for chicks
  • Open the grounds for visits
  • Open vacancies for people who want to work with animals

Why it's a great idea:

We have kept chickens in our garden for a few years. Since we've started we had some neighbours asking to see our chickens. Not only children, but adults as well. They are always so happy to spend time with our flocks. We want to bring that joy to more people. Help the community get to know several chicken breeds and the process they go through from the moment they develop inside an egg until they are mature adults. And if someone would like experience looking after animals we want to give them that chance without them having to travel far. More than ever we have to show people how renewable energies can be used. And we want to be the example they follow. Simple adaptations or actions we all can do to help the planet. If we all help it is always easier.

Steps to get it done:

  • Get the land
  • Clean and prepare the land
  • Build security fence
  • Plant trees, flowers and vegetables
  • Build the coops and runs; and install solar panels
  • Ensure all is set and secure for the animals arrival
  • Get the animals
  • Rescue roosters and drakes
  • Build a compost area
