How many of us take life's' simple pleasures for granted? We want to provide isolated members of society with the opportunity to enjoy evening activities, adding to the services of the Good Shepherd.
We are a charity in Wolverhampton which opens in the daytime 7 days a week to serve hot wholesome meals to the most isolated and needy in society to tackle the issue of food poverty. Whilst clients enjoy a hot meal in a safe environment we provide support on various issues and signpost to agencies across the city. We reach out to the marginalised in society who feel they are not excepted in society, having none or little money these individuals are socially excluded. By expanding our day time provision between 5:30 and 8:30 we can encourage and work with a small number of clients,trying new things and helping them find their passion as a positive diversion from their challenging and current lifestyles. Activities will include life skills, sport, art and recreational activities tailored around volunteers and clients. We will engage with some of the clients at the night shelter offering them a chance to partake in these sessions, giving them a safe place to socialise. .

Why it's a great idea:
Life is so difficult for many individuals as they battle with addictions , mental health issues and a perception of worthlessness. There is no evening provision in Wolverhampton for individuals as they begin to rebuild and reconnect with society and try to integrate. Our aim is to listen, build confidence, connect service users to professional agencies so help can be gained and in time encourage them to revalue their lives and look to the future with hope and positivity. We want to offer a small number of individuals a chance to engage in activities which will help them to find a new focus in life, supporting them on the road to an alternative path. Working with a small group gives us the ability to gain a deeper understanding of each individuals needs which then allows us to tailor the support we put in place. Activities will be varied so everyone has the chance to find themselves as they develop new skills and learn a way to express themselves.
Steps to get it done:
Our clients struggle with things we take for granted, and suffer challenges that many haven't experienced. Walking whilst sharing a conversation, sitting at a coffee shop with a friend, a trip to the cinema, playing cards or spending time socialising with others can be a space to mend. We want to give individuals this opportunity to integrate in society and find a way to live. It is so important to give our clients a new approach and for them to find activities which they can participate in and find an interest or passion to release anger, stress and anxiety which will help in time with their wellbeing and mental health. Pledging just £2 or £5 will go a long way to help improve the lives of those Wolverhampton residents facing difficult and challenging times. We have done it! Thanks to all the pledges which you have made to both support us and raise awareness of the work we are doing in Wolverhampton. Whoop, 80 people have pledged since fundraising began!
To all those who have supported our Lets Engage Project so far, thank you. We want to make changes to individuals who don't have the opportunities we have and give them a new focus and direction in life. So far we have been so fortunate to have been donated £3,510 in volunteering hours, we have 78 backers who have pledged £2,545. We still have 40 days left and £3,605 to raise, please spread the word and help us make changes to improve and enhance lives. Thank you

VolunteerThe Good Shepherd was established in 2003 by the Brothers of Saint John of God to address poverty, homelessness and inequality in Wolverhampton. The Brothers have been involved in supporting the community in Wolverhampton for over 30 years. Today they volunteer their time at the Good Shepherd to support our service users and assist staff in the day to day running of the centre.
Over the last 16 years the Good Shepherd has reached out to thousands of individuals and families living in crisis. Our vision is to end homelessness in Wolverhampton and create sustainable pathways out of homelessness and poverty.
At present we have 1100 registered service users with 62 different nationalities represented. There’s a wide age range of people accessing our services from 18 through to 80 years old.
We provide support and guidance to some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in the community. Our main client groups are rough sleepers, people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, families with support needs, people with multiple complex needs and people with no recourse to public funds.
Good Shepherd hosts a range of agencies in the centre and we’ve developed strong working relationships with key partners across the city. We’re members of strategic and operational groups and also attend the homelessness forum, shelter partnership, anti-slavery partnership and city centre tasking meetings.
Project Owner: Good Shepherd Services The Project Owner takes legal responsibility for receiving and spending the funds raised and ensuring the project is delivered.
