Creating a Community Space in Launceston

Gateway 2 New Life Church By Gateway 2 New Life Church

In 2012 we had a crazy idea to take over the running of a 10,000 square feet building in the heart of Launceston. The building had been used as a tax office and laid empty for the past few years.

Sorry this project was unsuccessful, we did not reach our fundraising goal.

Our vision is to create a community building in the heart of Launceston which brings together a range of organisations and agencies to develop a strong working relationship firstly within Launceston and then secondly the wider community within a 10 mile radius.

When planning this project we looked at the needs of the community and gaps in the current provisions to ensure that our work focuses on these. A community audit was held in May 2013 involving key organisations and groups within Launceston to help identify the unmet needs of the town. The event found that Launceston currently performs poorly on youth inclusion, lack of OAP drop-in centres and general accessible community facilities which are available throughout the week.

To support this, the police in Launceston report that the three biggest issues within the town at the moment are drugs, drink and anti-social behaviour. Each of these three issues can be linked to low self-esteem, peer pressure and boredom.

What we'll deliver:

  • Cooking skills
  • Pregnancy crisis
  • Youth cafe
  • Advice drop-in sessions
  • After school clubs
  • Breakfast clubs
  • Breast feeding support
  • Computer training
  • Drugs awareness
  • Job club
  • Knit and natter
  • Music skills for tots

Why it's a great idea:

Working in partnership with 'Redeeming Our Communities' we want to create a programme of activities that make a difference in our community.

We seek to ensure that within our project parameters we are fully inclusive and accessible to all sectors of the community. For instance, once funding has been obtained, one area that we will be creating is a ROC Café which will be aimed at the young people in Launceston. The café will host daily drop-in sessions for teenagers, which will ensure their views are represented and reflected in the running. We plan to regularly consult with the young people to hear their views about the activities on offer and how they can be improved upon. We would also love to see this café run by the youth for the youth.

We are requesting that you please consider supporting us raise £5,000 towards the necessary work to prepare and furnish the ROC Hub in order to meet the needs of the diverse range of groups that will use the ROC Hub.

Steps to get it done:

  • Electrical equipment - large screen TV, Wi-Fi equipment, computer console and games
  • Furniture – sofas, table and chairs
  • Pool table
