We've been transforming a disused & inaccessible green space into a vegetable garden to put fresh produce into our community food pantry. This project will make this a multi-purpose outside space so that schools, families and volunteers can learn about horticulture & to inspire a green revolution so that we can do our bit to tackle climate change and build a brighter Old Swan. We'll create a wheelchair accessible walkway, with a bike shed to encourage active travel, compost bins so we can convert waste and improve our soil. We'll create a butterfly garden, bug hotels & a pond to increase bio-diversity into our ecosystem and to create sensory mindful spaces for people to visit to find solace & sanctuary. A polytunnel will double our crop growth & extend our growing season. We'll host gardening, cooking, eco-system, composting, climate resilience, and water management workshops so that everyone gets the chance to learn that green activism can take place right on their door step.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
This project provides fresh produce to our community food pantry, offering healthy meals and reducing food insecurity to those on low income. It’s a hands-on learning hub where schools, families, and volunteers of all ages gain skills in gardening, composting, and environmental care. Designed for inclusivity, our wheelchair-accessible walkway and bike shed welcome everyone, promoting unity and active lifestyles while reducing our carbon footprint. Visitors enjoy sensory spaces like the butterfly garden, bug hotels, and pond, creating peaceful retreats that support biodiversity and nurture vital local ecosystems. Workshops on composting, climate resilience, and water management empower residents to make sustainable choices, creating a lasting eco-conscious impact. Our polytunnel extends the growing season, ensuring a steady food supply year-round and demonstrating the promise of small-scale urban agriculture. Together, we're building a resilient, greener, healthier Old Swan for all.
Steps to get it done:
This will be ... a place for growth and ambition - where people can volunteer in a nurturing and caring environment, learning and developing their horticultural, communication, and teamworking skills a place for connection, joy and laughter - the community garden will be a place to meet friends and connect with like minded community members. a place for nature - we will plan and design the garden to attract wildlife including insects, bird, this will include a pond area in order to attract biodiversity a place for children – we want to support young people in our community to have positive experience with nature through the garden with their family and friends. a place for pride - we want to garden to become a place where people cherish and where they can find solace and sanctuary. A place for community.
