Greenwich has been selected as a UK Urban Pilot for the introduction of driverless cars. Driverless cars have the potential to change the built environment and change the relationship between the city and the car and, significantly, the pedestrian and the car. There are fundamental issues about the shift in power and how pedestrian’s perceptions of vehicles will change if all cars are autonomous.

What we'll deliver:

• Can lighting be used to inform citizens about the movement and availability of driverless cars?
• Can lighting be used to reinforce new rules?
• e.g can lighting be a substitute for pedestrian crossing in an age when all cars will stop at all times for pedestrians?
• Explore how lighting can support the introduction of driverless cars,

Why it's a great idea:

Greenwich is one of the UK leaders in smart city innovation. Greenwich Peninsula is one of a number of major sites that form part of the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s regeneration and smart city strategy. The driverless car project is a key part of this.
