Discover and support community projects helping to transform Hackney's public spaces!
My project is aimed at young people aged between 12 and 18 split into groups of two (12-14 young adolescents and 15-18 mature adolescents). To gather in small initmate groups at a time in order to be heard and allow time to discuss issues that are pertinent to their lives. To have discussions on what life means to them, how they feel, their fears and hopes. To talk about their life without judgment nor prejudice, having a feel free environment where they feel secure and comfortable to discuss issues that dwindle in their minds without feeling ashamed or insecure. To explore their insecurities and positivity as an outcome for all of the above. To learn about respecting each other, sharing opinions and listening to one another. To build confidence, friendships and encourage teamwork as contributions towards life skills through education and work. To hear their ideas and ambitions in future and create opportunities for them. Groups will be based on empowerment and led by peers too.
What we'll deliver:
Why it's a great idea:
I personally understand why young people in today’s society feel unheard, unappreciated and hopeless. I can understand why young people also begin to develop these feelings, acting accordingly in time too. My background is based on teenage pregnancy, financial hardship, my father’s death and Mental Health. Having a teenage son living in Hackney is also my motivation for this project. Young people can’t alaways talk to their parents about feelings or pressures in life and I have experienced the Mental Health side of burying feelings, not opening up. I feel it is extremely important to get young people talking about any and everything, to see they’re not alone and be heard. Young people should get a feel of responsibility and leadership for life outside education and build their life skills. I want to make a difference and build relationships with these young people and let them know they’re not alone, create a safe space and help them find their purpose in life. It is my dream.
Steps to get it done:
The aim of my project is not to re create another youth club, however to create the ideal environment where adolescents can feel comfortable expressing themselves. This is a project based on real life. People tend to harbour a lot of emotions, ill feelings, negative thoughts and emotional issues that are not dealt with properly at an adolescent stage, tending to create long term complications when they’re full grown adults where it is more tideous to cope with. Hence, i want to create an atmosphere where I can encourage young people to deal with their issues and feelings at a younger age, to avoid developing into sterner issues that create a burdon on society later on in life. To minimise the stigma Mental Health and help them to understand and how they can be prapared for the responsibilities they may face later on in adult life.
