Sunday 25th September we aim have as many lights turned off as possible to show the wonders of the night sky. This will end a fabulous charity fundraising family day on Castle Hill.

A family friendly day highlighting the importance of light pollution, environmental kindness & the need to support each other. With food, drink, live music & stalls. Also as she wished, celebrating the life of Mandy Taylor MBE who passed away in Dec 21. Leaving behind her legacy to #BeMoreMandy a bid to raise valuable funds for underprivileged children whilst spreading the message ‘You can’t add days to your life, but you can add life to your days! One of the children we will be helping is local girl Eden Smith & supporting her campaign - ‘Eden’s Fight Against Cancer’ The day will culminate as we endeavor to turn as many lights as possible off in Huddersfield. Allowing everyone to enjoy the night sky with little light pollution, raise awareness of what this means to our environment & give people the opportunity to join many astronomers to look at our sky in awe. Against the backdrop of our iconic Victoria Tower an area we should be proud of & promote in the best 'light' possible.

VolunteerWe are the new initiative Huddersfield Lights Out (HLO). Inc Huddersfield Live/#BemoreMandy.
HLO was created from the desire to view the night skies free of light pollution. Also we hope to effect local/wider community change regarding our individual/collective responsibility towards taking better care of the world upon which we live. I generated interest via social media, and have now engaged our community with a event on the 25th of September 2022. Recognising that positive change requires action, HLO is my way of engaging the imagination of our community, as well as offering a simple yet effective way in which we can all play a part because, to my mind, the smallest of collective actions always contribute to the biggest of changes. HLO will serve not only our local community but will hopefully allow us to deliver a blueprint for other boroughs across the U.K., thus accomplishing a mutually beneficial change nationwide. To that end I’m hoping that people and companies will consider offering a donation, one that will contribute towards creating a foundation upon which HLO can be built in order to propel it forward. I recognise that I’m just one man with a vision, and the initial reaction, positive and enlightening as it’s been, will need more than just me banging the climate friendly drum; HLO will need additional funding in order to meet the requirements of staging the event in September, and events thereafter. To date I’ve managed to engage the support of Kirklees Council, as well as the engagement of thousands of residents and some business regarding the initial ‘lights out’ event in September, and there are now several members of Parliament on board. In order to proceed with the event funds will be required for a variety of reasons • health & safety/site security • a website and advertising, eg leaflets, printing equipment/supplies - event organisation and entertainment. HLO is also a charitable organisation (Inc #BemoreMandy as a means of promoting longevity and sustainability for the project. My hope is this: that my vision matches that of your ethos, in that you believe and support the notion that we all need to play our part in creating a more sustainable lifestyle, that you recognise that we are part of the world in which we all live, and that we’re not separate - rather we are all intrinsically connected to it. “For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream” ~ Vincent Van Gogh.
