Home from Home community cafe

Home from Home community cafe

Lisa Stickley By Lisa Stickley

I would like to rescue and old pub or similar building in the local community. By saving it from becoming flats I would open a cafe/community hub.

A pub/bar is the ideal building to house a cafe which will serve reasonably priced and offer healthy home cooked food as well as the odd naughty treat! Home from home will focus on the kind of home cooking you want to do but don't have the time or, particularly for the elderly or single parent, want to eat but can't be bothered to make 'just for me.' We will also provide allergy friendly options daily. A function room will further serve the community with socialising and wellbeing for the older customer throughout the day and then an after school place to grab a milkshake and hang out safely for young adults. (maybe even do their homework!) We will have an outdoor play area for younger children and support families during the often stressful after school dinner time/calming down time routine. By offering reasonably priced and healthy meals a parent/parents can bring their child to play and eat then listen to a group story before the close of the cafe each day.

What we'll deliver:

  • Good, healthy comfort food
  • safe and warm environment for the local community
  • allergy friendly options

Why it's a great idea:

Many pubs have closed due to lack of business or troubled areas and they have all been turned into flats that do not serve the local area. Often these services are not replaced for the community elsewhere and I want to prevent this and provide somewhere residents and visitors alike can come. Child minder groups and parents will use the child friendly facilities and enjoy the competitive prices. The elderly can come for a chat and a hot meal as well as well-being classes. Families can come to a non judgemental environment and feed their children the (secretly) healthy food they want to make themselves and get some respite with a piece of cake while they play and have a story. Young adults can wait for their parents or hang out with friends, listen to music and snack in a safe place after school maintaining independence in an age appropriate way. We will display local schools artwork and be open to private hire for parties, wedding reception, wakes, Christmas do's and parents nights out!

Steps to get it done:

Home from Home will be a warm and inviting cafe community hub. It has potential to operate as both a good quality cafe and a community/ leisure centre and could easily expand to children's activity days and holiday camps in the non public areas of the building as well as low priced events such as weddings etc.
