Burnside community garden By Burnside community garden

Im turning a derelict plot of land into a food production area to introduce health eating to our community.

Newcastle upon Tyne Idea stage

This project is preparing for fundraising. Click Like to show your support, or Follow for updates on this project's journey.

At present the disused area is used as a fly tipping area and attracts lots of anti social behaviour, we intent to transform the area into a food production zone, where we can do positive youth engagement workshops, some of these will be propagation of fresh fruit and vegetables, once the crops are grown we will be holding workshops to show low income family how they can set up small allotment area and grown stable foods and how to make affordable healthy meals for their families

What we'll deliver:

  • construction of raised beds
  • site clearance
  • ground works
  • propagation of a wide variety of vegetables and fruits
  • purchase of greenhouse and potting shed and tools
  • workshops in setting up some allotments at home

Why it's a great idea:

This is a great idea because i strongly believe that as community garden it is our duty to help the local community to come together by creating such projects for the people to get involved in and it helps keep the youths off the streets and actually doing something for their community. Also it will help young mothers and all to make a meal on a healthy affordable budget as there may not know how to.

Steps to get it done:

  • ask for local businesses to allow their staff to volunteer
  • i have already put up posters around my local area.
  • recruit local volunteers

This is stage one of the food production zone, once this area is up and running we have another large area which will be added to this zone and any surplus fruit and veg will be sold at the community hub shop which will help fund the future development and maintenance of this zone.

This project is part of the full Burnside community garden and community hub project which is regenerating a local area plighted by youth anti social behaviour, vandalism, low income families and drug and alcohol misuse
