Hang On

Susie Olczak By Susie Olczak

Hang On considers a different model for exhibitions. It utilises the abundance of cranes within urban space when they are not being used to create space to display public art. Hanging a group show.

This project would work in collaboration with local construction companies and projects in North London (Tottenham) where Susie Olczak's studio is. It is an area with a high degree of social deprivation so we hope that bringing exciting inclusive culture would be beneficial. We would then run outreach to support the main display of artworks on a Sunday hanging from the crane when not in use. The works would be curated and commission around four themes that are currently very critical in Tottenham/London/UK and globally. These are also issues that have been made worse by the pandemic, aiding conversations around recovery. 1) Sustainability 2) Mental Health 3) Diversity 4) Voted for by local community We would invite artists to make work to fit these themes and would engage local artists as Tottenham has a number of art spaces. We would also invite local schools and organisations to submit works to be considered or would engage them in outreach as part of the project.

What we'll deliver:

  • A day of displaying artworks hanging from crane(s)
  • Four local outreach sessions with schools/community groups
  • Photographic and video documentation of the project for marketing
  • Distributed interactive worksheet for young local children

Why it's a great idea:

Aiding conversations around recovery from pandemic Engaging local community in issues/art/culture Celebrating diversity and inclusion in the area Communication with people to increase engagement in local urban space development Helping to initiate conversations around sustainability and mental health

Steps to get it done:

  • Acquiring permission from construction company and agreeing dates
  • Getting local community to vote for final artwork category
  • Outreach workshops
  • Producing interactive worksheet and delivering to community groups/schools
  • Commissioning 4 local artists/groups to create work
  • Finalising plans for work completion
  • Publicity of main event
  • Main event
