We will see more people involved in a sport that emphasises the values of respect, discipline, teamwork, inclusivity and sportsmanship in an enjoyable activity. You will be supporting a strong, grassroots community club with a great record in supporting young people in achieving goals. The project will help improve mental and physical wellbeing and strengthen the club and community by offering volunteering and training opportunities for young people. We aim to help transition young people into sport for life and entry into work. This project will allow us to involve more young people with the rugby family at the club.
This is part of an initiative to help junior players to move into adult sport as players, coaches and admin, building friendships, skills and purpose into their lives.

What we'll deliver:

  • run 2 satellite clubs each week
  • train young coaches and adminsitrators
  • run at least 4 pitch up and play sessions at the club
  • run 4 taster tag pop ups in local parks
  • run a tag festival in late summer
  • offer kit and subs bursaries to new members next season
  • run safeguarding and coach training and pay for venue hire
  • fund an incentive programme to give young people opportunities beyond their locality
  • fund coaching support and development into next season
  • reward outstanding contributions from the young people involved in running the project

Why it's a great idea:

The inspiration behind this project is our young people, players and coaches and their families. Their enthusiasm, dedication and joy in their sport is why we do this. The young people of Hackney need the chance to join our warm and inclusive rugby family with its emphasis on pride in achievement and respect for others. Rugby improves mental and physical wellbeing, our sport has a strong set of values including sportsmanship and teamwork that help young people cope with setbacks and work together with diverse group of colleagues. It builds and rewards trust and honesty.

Steps to get it done:

  • work out a publicity and marketing strategy
  • identify and develop a team of coaches
  • organise training and venues
  • identify sites in local parks with the help of GLL and LB Hackney
  • set dates for pop ups, pitch up and plays and festival
  • agree plan for festival with Parks
  • audit club resources and buy new equipment as necessary
  • equip coaches with Hackney RFC branded kit
  • develop incentive plan including gym memberships, club bursaries and achievement awards
  • recruit and develop professional coach support
  • award Jack Petchey Achievement Awards to young administrators and coaches
