The local Anglican Church of St. Thomas used to be at the heart of the community but closed two decades ago. Its church hall, now renamed the Grimesthorpe family centre was the focus for many activities which united the neighbourhood. The building still stands but has generally deteriorated over the past twenty years. Most meeting places in this deprived inner city area have now closed so there is a vital need for the Centre to remain open. The vision of the trustees is to see the centre repaired and restored and to be at the centre of a very needy and isolated community. Currently the Centre has provided a meeting place for a Roma church each week. It also hosts clubs and parties and has a close relationship with the nearby Green Top Circus school. Volunteers run a thriving 30 strong youth group. There is also a popular mindfulness and wellbeing group which seeks to address issues of loneliness and poor mental health. Over 30 Roma young people attend a weekly boxing club.

What we'll deliver:

  • Provide a great community space
  • Knot together a broken community
  • Combat racial segregation

Why it's a great idea:

Its easy to give up on area. We are determined not to give into negativity and want to preserve a community hub that could so easily be lost. In the middle of so many bad feelings about Brexit we want to see a vibrant multicultural neighbourhood using the Centre.

Steps to get it done:

Areas are defined by their communities or lack of them. Wincobank Hill dominates the area and used to be the place where thousands lived and worked in the mighty industries along the River Don. A whole infrastructure grew up to service these communities: Churches, meeting places, clubs, shops, pubs. The massive industries of the Don Valley employing thousands are long gone and the area now struggles to find a cohesive identity. Newer more expensive housing occupies the upper parts of the hill but down near the main roads older terraced housing has mostly lost its value and is often the place where slum landlords make their profits. This bid is particularly interested in an area around Owler Lane and Holywell Road, just a stone’s throw from Forgemasters. The area is made up of terraced housing. Community facilities have shrunk away. The local churches have mostly closed as have the local pubs and community facilities.
