I want to use disused buildings/shops and instead of Turkish betting shops taking them over like on Green Lanes, I want the unemployed (and those with extra time) to offer skills to fix, paint and maintain a shop space. In these spaces, I want local councils and businesses to Donate computers and IT equipment. The new workers will set this up and let the homeless have a place to learn new skills improve communications skills. I want showers and a first aid area in each space so people can get cleaned up and have clothing provided for them. I want skills like carpentry, painting & decorating, administration to be taught so that others can learn new skills and feel in control again. I want people to be able to engage and understand how to communicate better to get a job in cafes, builders yards etc etc. With the support and funding from Businesses - they will also offer intern days for the members of the new Giving Others A Chance program. CV writing also offered with courses.

What we'll deliver:

  • teach basic skills
  • use existing talent that is unemployed
  • clean up empty property
  • give back to the community
  • give shelter to homeless
  • improve local area by cleaning and improving facilities

Why it's a great idea:

As someone that has been homeless, destitute, unemployed and made to feel worthless - I want to help others and use my knowledge and experience to help build communities whilst improving their lives. People want jobs, they want to improve the local area and want to feel human again. Businesses can offer internships to everyone - not just college leavers. When you have been unemployed for months, you would be happy to work a day or so for free just to be around peers again - to feel part of something worthy gain - to learn skills and use that on the CV to get a paid job just to get off JSA. I see many, many disused buildings that could be used to help others. With workshops to help others we can build communities and improve mental health. Supermarkets can donate food, clothing & larger stores can donate furniture, people can fix things and after a hot shower and some rest can help fight depression and give them something to be positive about again. People just need the CHANCE.

Steps to get it done:

  • business case agreed with council

It will impact peoples lives and when they can make a difference, the communities will improve and businesses will have skilled staff. Less people on the streets and more involved with making things, building things, working with the arts, applying knowledge and having some work will benefit everyone.
