GET OUT a registered charity - advancing environmental education, young people's lives and the community. GET OUT’s provides environmental education programmes in Tower Hamlets backed up with residential field trips where young people get to experience wilderness areas and back up their learning using adventure education principles. This support and activities are designed to develop the life skills of the young people that participate in the program concentrating on leadership, problem-solving, risk assessment and self-esteem enabling them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals. GET OUT Programme: Indoor programme (half day) - Teach about everyday environmental issues Adventure planning and preparation (half day) - plan residential camp including risk assessments, itinerary planning, logistics and equipment. Outdoor programme ( 2nights/3days) - Residential field trip in Cornwall to include outdoor learning, surfing, beach cleans, litter surveys and camping.

What we'll deliver:

  • Environmental education and local campaigns
  • Recreation/outdoor learning in natural world for disadvantaged young people
  • Introduce and teach disadvantaged young people sport of surfing

Why it's a great idea:

Three-quarters of young people spend less time outdoors than prison inmates. When the data is dissected it is those from ethnic minorities and who experience poverty who are affected the most. How can we ever expect these groups of young people to value the environment and play a role in its protection if they never experience it first hand? GET OUT not only ensures all young people in Tower Hamlets will be able to experience the natural world we also help improve lives through the teaching of vital life skills such as leadership skills and problem-solving. Skills that will create more mature and confident individuals within their communities and throughout their lives.

Steps to get it done:

  • At least 5 schools or community centres sign up to GET OUT programme in 2019
  • First 3 mosques agree to going plastic free in 2019
  • First 100 participants take part in GET OUT programme in 2019
  • Two schools launch plastic free programs and campaigns
