Potato and its Companions seeks to transform SET Dalston’s outdoor alleyway into a green and healthy commune for local residents and artists. This initiative is an extension of SET’s foremost objectives in bringing disused space back into positive use. Whilst promoting environmental protection and improvement, Potato and its Companions is also the starting point for a series of long-term community projects, bridging gaps between the arts and ecology within the local community. The project will directly involve residents local to SET in Dalston and Associate Members of SET (over 80% of whom live/work in Hackney) in building a garden together. It will do so in two ways: firstly, the project will include a one-day ceramics workshop, open to all and run by artist Hattie Moore, to produce plant receptacles, that will culminate in the opening of the garden. Secondly, locals and artists are invited to come and have a tidy-up day prior to the opening.

What we'll deliver:

  • Re-Green SET Dalston's outdoor/unused area.
  • Promote environmental protection and improvement.
  • Engage local community.
  • Inspire collaboration between Hackney’s locals and SET, Dalston artists.

Why it's a great idea:

This project will improve environmental protection as well as is the starting point for a series of long-term community projects bridging gaps between the arts and ecology as well as the local community!

Steps to get it done:

  • Buy Plants and Seeds, Grow lights, Compost & Red-Terracotta Clay for Pots
  • Advertise Pottery Workshop and Garden Opening to Locals and Artists
  • Clean and Dig Up Garden Area
  • Run pottery workshop and fire pots
  • Build shelving Units, Install Grow Lights, Pots, and Benches
